Of Kings & Cowboys --- Where we are, and what we need:

High-goal polo is finally coming to the big screen. I'm an attorney-turned-writer/producer, avid player (when I can) (SEE BIO BELOW) currently developing the feature film Of Kings & Cowboys from my screenplay. There's plenty of room for you to be involved, if you're interested.

This is an action-packed love story, set on polo fields around the world, and featuring both men's and women's high-goal polo. It tells the story of Cutter McCallum, a troubled young man growing up in the Texas hill country, working for a rancher, Stanley Rankin (Tommy Lee Jones?) (based loosely on Cecil Smith). When Rankin trains and sponsors him, Cutter finds himself rocketing to the top of the international professional polo circuit. There he finds love in Catarina (Argentinian beauty, polo-family heiress). But there he is also tormented with his fight-first spirit, along with national and family conflicts which stand in the way of Cutter and Catarina being together. When Cutter destroys everything he ever loved, he is forced to find himself again, his priorities, and to sacrifice everything for the people and horses he loves. It is a powerful story of redemption and love, set in the most dynamic and beautiful sport in the world.

What we need: Individuals and clubs and sponsors who may wish to participate in the film in a direct manner (facilities, riding, equine services, etc.) and/or financially.

I am a big fan of this site, and want to be sure I do not appear to be 'fundraising' here. So, sufficice it to say that below is my contact info. We are seeking pledged funds triggered on actual studio greenlights, NOT funds coming to us the producers. If you would like to learn more, and join in and help as an Executive Producer, please contact me. I will send you the Private Placement Memorandum (ie financial plan) and a confidential copy of the script.

This is probably the number one way to promote our sport, and to give it a great boost in its Olympics push. It will be a beautiful, powerful film that you will be proud to say you helped get made.

Please contact me 24/7 and let's talk about it!

WHO IS DAVID MARLETT?  Understandably many have been asking this question. As a friend of mine here on PCW told me, "If you don't tell them, they will make it up!" So, here's a quick bio:
I am an attorney and writer/producer.  My law work focuses on corporate and M&A matters.  I have worked primarily in investment banking, or merchant banking, for 15+ years.  (This makes me well-aligned for forming film financing mechanisms that work well for investors.)  During the past few years I wrote one novel (historical fiction based on famous trial), which, according to the NY agent is finally getting published this year.  I am currently working on my second novel, and three screenplays.  I live in both LA and Dallas, and commute often.  My children are in Dallas, so I am there most often.  My work in LA is in the film biz, where I have written and sold many screenplays....though none as yet has been made. (If you know the film biz, you know that that is fairly common.)   I am a freelance photographer, and have sold many of my pieces over the years.  I am an occasional actor, and have performed on stages in Dallas, Austin and Los Angeles.  My passion is writing and producing movies, and ultimately directing (see the photography, writing, acting and leadership experience above.)  I am not currently on IMDB, but will ask my LA agent to get some of the screenplays in development on there soon.  I grew up in West Texas, exercising high-dollar racing foals, and playing polo collegiately and in small clubs in Austin, Houston and Dallas, Texas. The story of Of Kings & Cowboys is a very personal to me, and one that I am extremely passionate about getting made, and made beautifully. Ok, that's a quick snapshot.  If you are interested in getting involved in the film, I will provide much more detailed info, CV, etc.

David, I like you am a very passionate man about polo. I was rated 8 goals outdoors and I am excited about your movie as well. I don't know how I might help but have an interest in doing what I can. I look forward to hearing from you. Dale

The idea sounds great, about time we talked about kings and cowboys, and of course, polo. Grew up on horses, cattle ranching in Uruguay, grand dad bred polo ponies for teams in Argentina back when it got started there. I only took it up in later years for the love of horses. Horses and polo have taken me to meet and get involved with every aspect, from playing to grooming and cleaning out stalls, from meeting the likes of Hector Garcia and T.L.J in Houston to the 10's in B.A, to the likes of some of the best grooms in the land, all over horses, a good asado and simple talk. S.B. 's memorable book was created at Pucara. If she were alive today she would jump on the wagon with her crew and horses too! If you want to succeed get the likes of T.L.J to get involved, no one more down to earth when it comes to polo and horses. but above all, keep it horsy and simple, kings and cowboys only mix when it comes to horses, and yes polo, but often part too soon after.
Good luck, if you want to talk it would be my pleasure to share some ideas and experience, the horsy way. Nutin' fancy!
Best, Ian

Hello David,

might be able to help you out with free graphic and web design services instead of other funding?

Regards, Simone www.7scout7.com

Update: We have several clubs and brands (such as Land Rover, Cartier, Ralph Lauren, etc.) taking a look at the film for possible involvement. That's great! Also, an enomously popular (and equally expensive!) actor is very interested now....we are negotiating....

If you have the script, please get your review posted here on our Group page when you can. Also, if you haven't seen the script yet, but want to get an early read, email or call me. And finally, if you ever dreamed of being an Executive Producer of a major motion picture, here's your chance. Let's be honest: how many opportunites for such a thing come your way in a lifetime? Again, just email or call me. Thank you!
David

hi David, fascinating project! need help with still photography? (besides your own)
check out my site: www.christinadelimur.com (click on 'polo')
I started playing polo in Dallas in '90, when I lived there for 10 years.
It's so vital to promote polo! A feature length film is what we all would like to see.
There are extraordinary locations (Mexico) that could be of interest to you for filming, easily accessible, that I can arrange.
Thanks for inviting me - more later. Christina

Thanks for the note Willem. What we're doing is a major motion picture, feature film for theatrical release, with a budget of about USD $50M, depending on talent attached. I am definitely intrigued about the documentary...it is a great idea. I hope they will cover some of the ranching influence from Texas too, such as Cecil Smith, etc. Yes, please give your producer my email (dmarlett@BlueRunProductions.com) and hopefully we can visit further. If you'd like, I'll get you the OKC script, just let me know.
Thank you,
David
