Dear Starcy,

it seems you have very less knowledge about horses and polo. To build a club you should better look for a person with polo experiences. There is no book I know that could give you all this advices but have a look at the attached file from the USPA about "How to start a polo club".
And for the best polo field construction you should ask a landscape specialist ( ask the golf club in your area who was designing their fields, so you'll find a grass specialist to ask).

I hope it helps.

Dear Sandra,

Thank you very much for your information. You're absolutely right. I barely know anything about horses and polo. It's not that polular in China, but more and more people are showing there interests and getting involved in the sports. That's why my friend wants to build the best and world-class Polo club in China.

He's an expert in equestrianism and the owner of a great equestrian club. We've got the farms for polo fields. And trying to look for an experienced group of architects from US or Argentina. But it's still better for us to get as much as information ourselves.

The PDF you sent to me is very helpful. Thanks again:)

Cheers,

Dear Stacey,

here some advice of the german polo association about how to care the grass.
It's a google traslation, so I hope you'll understand ist:

The care of the Polo grass

The grass of each Polo field, which is virtually the business card of the Polo clubs and must therefore always be undertaken with great care will be maintained. Mowing, fertilizing, blasting, and a permanent fight against weeds is essential to the polo pitch playable on hold.

After the end of the polo season, it is important, no later than mid-October all the holes on the polo field to 75% with filtered topsoil mixed with Grassaat and 25% sand to fill. This must be done throughout the polo season after every game to be repeated.
Thus the green grass and remains equally tight, the lawn mowed regularly, are ventilated and fertilized. Mown in May and June, twice in the week, at least every five to six days. If a lawn mowed paths in parallel, with each change the interface direction. Where the grass is not regularly cut, develop so-called upper grass with long stems and strong seeds approach - they crowd out the cut and is solid and grasses from the lawn, a poorly recordable meadow.

If a lawn is not watered regularly, he may suffer permanent damage and he ultimately died from, is yellowish and then brown. The water is about 10-20 l / sqm, representing approximately 10-20 mm of rain case.

Another important work is the fertilization of the lawn, because if the grass is always cut, it must be well again to feed themselves. The uniform of the lawn fertilizer with slow-release fertilizer is made from the end of March / early April every eight to ten weeks, alternating with each compound and nitrogen fertilizer. Particularly important is the fall fertilization, in October, so even in winter root growth is promoted.

Every lawn needs air. A ventilation of the polo lawn is especially important, since the turf surface by strain hard compacted. A better air promotes the growth of roots. After airing the lawn with sand, guarantee the punctured holes in the falls and a constant ventilation and an improvement of the water withdrawal effect. The venting and is even more important, the more intense a lawn is used. You should do the first time in spring, because then the fastest sand mixed.

Fight grass herbs. Prevention is always the best weed control. "Löwenzahn, Klee, Breitwegerich, Gänseblümchen, etc." Dandelions, clover, plantain Broad, daisies, etc. should be in May and again in July to be treated with herbicides. The most effective compounds are ready for lawn fertilizers with herbicides. The site should then at least one week not to be mowed so that the mean effect.

I hope this also helps, but always look how is the earth of your field, the weather in your aerea and what are the herbs problems where you are. That's so special in polo, it's always the same game under different circumstances, how wonderful experiences! HAPPY POLO

Hi Starcy,
I was involved in building a polo club in Shanghai in China and I am sure you will be facing many of the same challenges we had, such as type of grass for your climate, supplies of feed, building and construction done by Chinese firms for such things they have never built before.
Aside from books, literatures etc which you can find on the internet from horse management universities/courses, you will really need a person there such as suggested before by Sandra. Especially the field is a critical item for which you need local knowledge of the climate aside from polo field climate. Even when you know what you want, it may be hard to find in China...such as was experienced in Shanghai.
I may be able to help you with some contacts and suppliers that were used for Shanghai. Send me email with some detailed required and I will try answer as best as I can. Email: swelkers@gmail.com

Hello Starcy,

We provide consultancy and management services for equestrian & polo clubs and for the organization of tournaments and competitions........we operate across the Asia Pacific region - and including in China. Our China office is in Shanghai although we do also have a few staff located in Beijing (about 6 people currently in Beijing working on projects). The best thing to do would probably be to talk to one of them and discuss what you are trying to do and see if they can help you in some ways. I suggest you call Ms Hua on 13701899195. Good luck.

Dear Starcy,

Look at my profile page. Everything you see there was designed by me and constructed by my companies. I have participated in over 6000 acres of master planned development world wide, from acquisition thru entitlements, financing and ultimate sale. For equestrian/polo projects only, I am willing to provide consultancy. Otherwise, we are only interested in our own projects. You may contact me preliminarily through private message in this network.

I am intrigued to know more about your project. Several years ago, I looked seriously into 9 Dragons in Zhejiang. Have they completed their fields yet?

Sincerely,

Travis Anderson

We have 9 polo fields, stables for 150 horses and we are at this moment constructing 160 more. Stacey,
you're far away from europe, but I can say you, Santa Maria Polo Club is the most important polo club outside England in Europe. So if Santiago offers you his knowledge, take his hand and don't let it loose.
I don't know Santiago personally, but I know the club and many people, patrons aswell as professionals, who are playing there.

[what a pity that the famous polofield nearby the beach has disappeared]

Dear Friends,

I would like to thank you for all of your help and suggestions. I translated and forwarded every single entry to my friend, Mr. Lee, the owner of Beijing Sheerwood Equestrian Country Club, where welcomed Prince Andrew Oct. 2008. He will take your advice into earnest consideration. You'll hear from him soon if he needs further discussion.

Again, he still hopes I can find some books on Polo Club management, Polo field construction, building stables etc. for him here in US. If anyone has some clues, please let me know.

Thanks.
Best wishes,
starcy
